Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in April 2014 were 7.4 million metric tons (Mt), up by about 11 percent from the level in April 2013, according to the recent USGS Mineral Industry Surveys. Shipments for the year through April were 23.1 Mt, up by about 6 percent from the same period in 2013.
The leading portland cement producing states in April were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Pennsylvania, in descending order, and these accounted for nearly 46 percent of the total output. The leading consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, in descending order) received about 41 percent of the April total shipments.
Clinker production totaled 5.7 Mt in April 2014, up by nearly 3 percent from the output in April 2013. Production for the year through April totaled 20.0 Mt, up by about 4 percent. The leading clinker-producing states in April were California, Texas, Florida, Missouri and Pennsylvania, in descending order, and these accounted for about 49 percent of total output for the month.
Masonry cement shipments in April 2014 of about 203,000 metric tons (t) were up by about 11 percent from those of April 2013. Shipments for the year through April totaled 664,000 t, up by nearly 7 percent. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia, and these received almost 52 percent of April’s total shipment.
